The Zimbabwe Association of Community Radio Stations (ZACRAS) has established a secretariat in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe to spearheard specific advocacy and lobby activities aimed at establishing community radios stations through out the country. ZACRAS notes with concern that Zimbabwe is the only country with no community radio stations functioning. This has created uninformed communities that can not take charge of what is happening around them. Lack of community radio stations has caused impoverishment, marginalisation of minority groups and the general lack of development.
ZACRAS further notes that lack of licences has caused indignation from community radio initiatives scattered around the country since 2003. It must be advised that as we welcome the appointment of the Zimbabwe Media Commission, if the current situation continues to hold we will be left with no option but to encourage our membership to make use of the airwaves with or without licenses. As the global political agreement takes a snail’s pace in resolving outstanding issues ZACRAS notes that community radios are the answer to the nation. Scattered all over the country community radios will be able to disseminate information of concern to the specific communities at relevant times in local languages. ZACRAS deplores the statements and promises made by politicians on the licensing issue. Lack of information and disinformation on the granting of licenses has pushed initiatives to the edge. In the same vein ZACRAS disowns the appointment of the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe its composition, and the values represented by its members. ZACRAS continues to call on the inclusive government to free the airwaves and create an inclusive broadcasting scenario in the country ,at least, for the good of all.
